Lupins are a wonderful cottage garden plant with tall spires of flowers that grow quickly in spring and come back every year. They are brilliantly hardy with the added benefit they are soil improvers, fixing nitrogen in the soil with their leguminous roots. Sometimes called a 'pioneer species' as they will grow on poor soils, including polluted or stoney ground.
